Onion Straws
1 large onion, sliced into thin rings
500 ml buttermilk
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp paprika powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp Mexican-style chili powder
freshly ground black pepper
Approximately 1/2-1 liter canola oil for deep frying
Start by slicing the onion into thin rings. Place the onion slices in a dish and pour the buttermilk over them.
Next, mix the spices with the flour. Then heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot. Once the oil has reached the desired temperature (about 190°C), begin to coat the onion rings in the flour mixture and deep fry in small batches.
It’s important for the flour mixture to coat the onion well, and working in small batches will help prevent the rings from sticking together.
When the onion rings or straws are golden brown, let the excess oil drain on paper towels and fry the next batch while keeping an eye on the previous one.
