Marzipan Braid
Dough:
100 g butter
1/2 dl sugar
250 g flour
1 egg
1/4 tsp almond extract
Filling:
100 g marzipan, coarsely grated
1/2 green apple, peeled and thinly sliced
50 g butter
50 g sugar
Cinnamon
Prepare the dough by working all the ingredients together in a food processor until it forms a ball. It’s a good idea to chill the dough in the fridge so it holds together better when rolled out.
Grate the marzipan coarsely. Roll out the dough into a wide strip. Spread the filling along the center of the dough strip. Cut diagonal slits in the dough on both sides of the filling to braid the dough over the filling.
For the filling, sprinkle cinnamon along the center of the dough, crumble half of the butter and sugar mixture on top, then layer the thin apple slices over it. Add more cinnamon, the rest of the sugar and butter, and finish with the grated marzipan. Fold the dough strips alternately over the filling to create a braided appearance.
Bake at 175°C for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry turns lightly golden.
Optional: Prepare a simple icing from powdered sugar and a little water to drizzle on top. You can also garnish with chopped walnuts or almonds for extra decoration.
